Welcome to The Southeast Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association

The Southeast Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association was established in 2003 to provide “Regional Answers to Regional Needs” to Southeast Michigan’s Green Industry firms.

SEMNLA is a Federated Chapter of the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA). If your firm is a member in good standing with the MNLA and you are located in any of these Southeast Michigan Counties—Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne—you are automatically enrolled as a member in the SEMNLA Chapter.

SEMNLA Oudolf Garden Detroit Tour Wrap-up

Oudolf Garden Detroit is the newest public garden designed by Piet Oudolf, world-renowned perennial garden expert, and is located on Belle Isle in Downtown Detroit. It officially opened to the public on August 28th of this year and SEMNLA was able to tour it exactly one month later.

Richard Thomas, one of the original Oudolf Garden Detroit Grounds Crew members, shared valuable insight on the construction and care of the garden, which features both matrix and block-style planting, as well as a rain garden. We are excited to see how the garden will evolve with the seasons and over the years!

5th Annual Green Industry Chapter Shoot Out Competition and Meet & Greet a Great Success!

Discount Tree Sales & Transplanting - Tied for 1st Place  Rocks 'N' Roots - Tied for 1st Place  Bay Landscaping - 2nd Place

On October 7th, members of the Southeast Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association, the Capital Area Landscape and Nurseryman’s Association, and the Saginaw Valley Nursery & Landscape Association met at the Island Lake Shooting Range in Brighton to compete in the 5th Annual Green Industry Chapter Shoot Out Competition. The event featured a friendly competition as the teams shot at 50 sporting clays on a 7-station course.

After the event we all went over to Unilock® Michigan, Inc. where we enjoyed a delicious dinner and networking. Our appreciation goes to Tom Niebauer, Unilock General Manager and the entire Unilock Team for their continued support of our great, Green Industry and for hosting this event.

It was a fun afternoon and the competition was close but three individuals and three teams rose to the top to win the Shoot Out. In 1st Place our sharp shooter was Brent Gaudreau on the Bay Landscaping, Inc. Team hitting 47 out of 50 clays. In 2nd Place it was Jason Zendt on the Rocks ‘N’ Roots team hitting 45 clays, and in 3rd Place we had Jack Zendt on the Rocks ‘N’ Roots team hitting 44 out of 50 clays. The 2nd Place team this year was Team Bay Landscaping, Inc. — Jerry Somalski, Brent Gaudreau, and Jay Kelly. And this year’s winning team is… drum roll please… it was a tie this year for 1st Place! Our two winning teams are:
• For the 5th year in a row, from the Southeast Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association, Team Rocks ‘N’ Roots—Jack Zendt, Jason Zendt, Aaron Phillips, and Caitlin Zendt!
• And with a tie for 1st Place and for the first year, from the Capital Area Landscape & Nurseryman’s Association, Team Discount Tree Sales & Transplanting — Kim Dudley, Lawrence Kaylor, and Mike Matthews.

Each of our winning teams will have the traveling trophy for half of the year so make sure to stop by Discount Tree Sales & Transplanting, beginning in January 2022 and at Rocks ‘N’ Roots beginning in June 2022 to see it proudly displayed!
